Designing for the UAE Climate
A landscape feels natural when its response to sun, shade, soil, water and daily life has been considered from the beginning.
The strongest landscape concept rarely begins with a catalogue of plants or a preferred visual style. It begins with the site itself. Reading the land closely gives every later decision a reason, from the position of a shaded seat to the route of an irrigation line.
Read the site as one system
Sun exposure, shade, soil condition, water sources, existing utilities and movement routes are connected. Looking at them separately can solve one issue while creating another. A useful site analysis records how these conditions meet across the day and across the whole plot.
Daily habits matter just as much as physical conditions. Arrival, family gathering, service access and the view from inside should inform the plan. The garden becomes easier to use when its circulation follows real life rather than forcing people around a decorative composition.
Let comfort guide the composition
In the UAE, comfort is shaped by where shade falls, how exposed surfaces receive heat and how people move between indoor and outdoor spaces. These observations can establish the main garden rooms before detailed planting begins.
A shaded destination needs a clear relationship with the house, useful access and enough openness to feel welcoming. Water, planting and built shade can then support that arrangement instead of competing for attention.
The site is not a blank page. It is the first and most useful part of the brief.
Choose planting and materials together
Climate-ready planting is not a separate decorative layer. Plant size, growth habit, soil preparation and irrigation demand should be considered alongside paving, walls and structures. This helps roots, drainage and maintenance access remain part of the design.
Durable materials should suit their position and purpose. A surface used for daily movement has different needs from a quiet planted edge. When material character and practical use agree, the finished landscape feels calm rather than overworked.
